Toyota’s Slow-Roll Approach to EVs Has Given It a Leg Up

toyota s slow roll approach to evs has given it a leg up

Toyota was slower and less aggressive than most other automakers with its electrification plans, leading some in the industry to criticize its hesitance to move. That approach has proven to be a smart one for Toyota, as it’s now able to strategically roll out new electric and electrified models without having tens of billions of dollars sitting on the line with new facilities and investments. The automaker is planning new models and is expected to transition one of its most popular vehicles to electric propulsion soon.

In addition to releasing a new three-row EV, Toyota is expected to shift the Highlander from gas to electric power. That could happen as soon as this year, though the SUV isn’t expected to go on sale until the 2026 calendar year. While it’s a surprising move for Toyota, the newer Grand Highlander has significantly cut into its sales numbers, so an electric model would help differentiate the two SUVs.

Toyota’s new three-row EV was first teased at a Japanese press event in 2021. It was then called the bZ5X, but the company’s recent bZ4X name change will likely mean a different name when it arrives late next year. We don’t have many details on the new vehicle, but it should slot into the lineup above the upcoming electric Highlander.
