Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have become must-have features for many buyers, leaving automakers scrambling as they try to figure out how to monetize in-vehicle infotainment. Some companies have sidestepped those smartphone technologies entirely, including Rivian, but its software has received more than its fair share of complaints. The automaker recently updated the system with new Google features that should improve the experience.
Called Rivian Navigation with Google Maps, the new feature uses a Rivian interface over Google’s mapping technology. Rivian said the update “gives manufacturers like Rivian the freedom to build a custom navigation system on top of foundational Google Maps technology and information. It brings together the best of both worlds: over two decades of navigation expertise from Google Maps – and the custom design and EV-friendly navigation features from Rivian that owners love.”
The system brings new navigation features, including a range on arrival feature that gives more accurate range estimates based on driving behaviors and road conditions. Charging stops are better integrated with routing information, and the system offers real-time views of charging data from a range of providers, including Rivian’s Adventure Network and Tesla’s Superchargers. The system also provides a charging score that helps owners determine the best and most efficient charging locations. Many of the features will be available in the Rivian mobile app, though some may require a subscription to the Connect+ service.
