The all-electric Jeep Recon has seen delays and will now release later in 2025 instead of the originally planned 2024 debut. Despite those challenges, Jeep views the vehicle as its “next big thing,” with an executive in the UK saying the brand sees the Recon as its version of the Land Rover Defender.
Jeep UK’s managing director, Kris Chomondeley, said he’s “most excited” about the Recon. “The Recon will take everything that’s enduring about the Wrangler and modernize it. The best example is to look at the old Defender and the new Defender.” Jeep’s other EV, the Wagoneer S, borrows some styling elements from the Grand Cherokee and gas Wagoneer, but it’s a sleeker, more road-oriented vehicle than the Recon appears to be.
Jeep hasn’t elaborated on the Recon’s specs, but it should be similar in size to the four-door Wrangler Unlimited. It will also sport available all-terrain tires, an adjustable ride height, and removable doors. The automaker will use Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, which works with 400- and 800-volt architectures, but we don’t know which Jeep will utilize.
Whether any of this is enough to sway Jeep’s ultra-loyal buyers remains to be seen. The Wagoneer S has sold in abysmal numbers, leading the automaker to issue discounts and incentives to move units. That’s not a great omen for the Recon, which will face the same skeptical audience when it arrives later this year.
