When it comes to American vehicles, there are two major groups with easy-to-remember nicknames. The modern “Big 3” mass-market automakers are General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis. Back in the first half of the 20th century, America’s luxury car manufacturers were part of a group known as the “Three Ps”: Packard, Peerless, and Pierce-Arrow. Unfortunately, none of those three survived past the 1950s.
Pierce-Arrow started as the George N. Pierce Company, a manufacturer of household items such as bathtubs and bird cages, in 1878. It eventually transitioned into making bicycles and, later, automobiles. After Pierce vehicles won several Glidden Tours, the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company was launched in 1908.
Nobody knew at the time, but Pierce-Arrow would cease operations 30 years later. Today, the Pierce-Arrow Museum estimates only 3,000-plus of the approximately 80,000 cars produced by the company still exist. Less than a decade before its demise, the Buffalo, New York-based automaker produced the Model 54 Convertible Sedan you see here. As a 1932 model, it benefits from the new straight-eight engine introduced for 1929, which is connected to a three-speed manual. According to the Pierce-Arrow Society, the engine’s “bore and stroke were 3½ by 4¾ inches, adding up to 366 cubic inches. With a 5:1 compression ratio and engine speed of 3200 rpm, the new straight-eight developed 125 horsepower. Pierce-Arrow advertising claimed a top speed of 85 mph.”
This yellow and black four-door drop-top also benefits from long-term collector ownership as well as a restoration carried out several years ago. Judging by the photos, the car looks as if its overhaul was just completed. The chrome shines, the whitewalls appear to be bright and clean, and the reddish-brown leather seats seem fresh and full of padding. Altogether, given the combination of its size, ornamentation, and short greenhouse, this Pierce-Arrow is both stately and sporty.
Just last year, the big I8 and other mechanical components received a $45,000 servicing, which is documented in the invoices that come with the car.
