2026 MG 4: Major interior update revealed, Australian timing unconfirmed

MG is addressing one of the key complaints levelled at its MG 4 small electric hatch.

The Chinese brand has revealed an overhauled interior for its rear/all-wheel drive MG 4 hatch in Brazil, bringing it in line with the mechanically related MG S5 EV small electric SUV.

The updated MG 4 appears to have received no exterior changes, with MG’s Brazilian arm using carryover images of the current model on its website.

Unlike many mid-life updates, there haven’t even been any changes to wheel designs with those of the pre-update Essence and XPower carried over.

Inside, however, it’s radically different, with a layout borrowed from the MG S5 EV.

Brazil is a left-hand drive market, and the new interior has yet to appear on the websites for any of MG’s right-hand drive export markets.

We’ve contacted MG Motor Australia to confirm when the update is coming here.

The prominent high-mounted ‘shelf’ that housed the rotary gear selector has been removed, with the dial now moved to the centre console near a wireless phone charger.

The 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen have been replaced by larger 10.25-inch and 12.8-inch units, respectively.

There’s a more attractive row of physical switchgear below the touchscreen with what appears to be a pair of knobs for fan speed and volume adjustment.

MG’s Brazilian website shows both black and tan interior colourways, and overall the interior looks more softly styled and inviting.

It’s unclear if we’ll get a light colourway here, as all MG 4s sold in Australia currently have a black interior.

The redesigned interior more closely resembles that of the new front-wheel drive MG 4, which is due in Australia during the second quarter of 2026, though there are some key differences like a smaller screen, more neatly integrated digital instrument cluster, and different switches.

While it replaces the familiar MG 4 in some markets, in Australia this more curvaceous hatch will instead slot in under it as an entry-level small EV.

It’ll be offered here with 43kWh and 54kWh batteries, while the existing MG 4 will be available here only with a larger 64kWh battery. That will see the existing MG 4’s base 51kWh battery pack, as well as the Long Range’s 77kWh, dropped in our market.

The existing MG 4 produces 150kW of power with the 64kWh battery pack, except in all-wheel drive XPower guise which features a second electric motor for total outputs of 320kW and 600Nm.

Per the Brazilian website, MG hasn’t increased power or torque for either the standard 150kW variant – sold there in Comfort and Luxury trims – or the XPower.

The introduction of a second MG 4 model in Australia could help the brand consolidate its presence in the small electric hatch segment.

To the end of November, MG has delivered 2901 MG 4s in Australia this year. That has seen it overtaken by the BYD Dolphin (2983), with its 52.3 per cent year-to-date decline almost mirrored by its rival’s 58.2 per cent rise.

The GWM Ora is a distant third in the segment, with just 688 vehicles sold year-to-date – down 41.8 per cent.
