MG Cyberster GTS coupe heading to Australia

Last week’s Shanghai auto show saw the digital unveiling of the new hardtop MG Cyberster GTS, which the company claims will arrive in Chinese dealerships soon, with the product likely heading to Australia in due time.

The unveiling of the hardtop model electric sports car – expected to be priced below the current convertible – comes at the same time that MG has added a new rear-wheel drive (RWD) version of the electric Cyberster convertible to its local lineup.

This has seen the base price of the Cyberster lineup drop below $100,000 for the first time.

The convertible uses the same European-made roof mechanism as the BMW Z4, which adds a decent price hike to the Chinese-made car.

MG says the new hardtop GTS will initiate a ‘family-oriented product strategy,’ which suggests that more performance-focused versions of the Cyberster could be on the way.

While MG’s new base Cyberster RWD variant generates 250kW of power and 475Nm of torque from its rear-mounted electric motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) models have 375kW of power and 725Nm of torque.

For the convertible, the 0-100 km/h time is 3.2 seconds in the top-spec AWD models and 5.2 seconds in the RWD variant. We suspect these figures will drop with the GTS coupe, as it should weigh less due to its fixed roof.

The current model’s driving range on the NEDC cycle is quoted at 552km and 500km for the RWD and AWD variants, respectively – figures that should improve with a less heavy car.

The MG Cyberster GTS is effectively a production version of the MG Cyber GTS concept car revealed at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed last July (pictured here).
