stellantis canadian production pause is over

Stellantis temporarily shuttered one of its Canadian production facilities as it assessed the impacts of President Trump’s tariffs, but the shutdown didn’t last long. The automaker recently restarted operations at its minivan production facility, recalling more than half of the 900 temporarily laid-off workers at the plant.

The Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario handles the Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager vans, as well as the new Dodge Charger Daytona. Stellantis called back workers to restore two shifts at the plant and sent workers back to its Sterling Stamping, Indiana Transmission, and Kokomo Transmission facilities in the United States.

While the plants’ reboot is a good sign for Stellantis, it’s not out of the woods yet. The company plans to pause production of the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee starting next week, and one of the facilities will shut down again for a week in May. Stellantis will also delay a planned update for the Grand Cherokee until the 2026 model year instead of rolling out the changes in 2025.

Stellantis faced significant challenges before tariffs hit the streets. Buyers have balked at the automaker’s brands’ pricing, especially Jeep, where sales have taken a hit due to overly expensive new-vehicle MSRPs. Its CEO also stepped down late last year after a disappointing sales performance, leaving it searching for a new lead executive at a crucial time.
