Xpeng update brings safety tech improvements, targets ‘phantom braking’

Xpeng has rolled out a global over-the-air (OTA) software update for its electric vehicles (EVs), with a key focus being the improvement of its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

In an update dubbed XOS 5.6, Xpeng has refined the systems in its EVs, which includes the G6 SUV that’s currently its only model on sale in Australia.

Headlining the changes is an upgrade to its adaptive cruise control system, which Xpeng claims “now significantly reduces unexpected deceleration”, more commonly known as phantom braking.

Phantom braking occurs when a vehicle’s safety system incorrectly identifies an object and applies the brakes, catching the driver – and potentially other motorists – off-guard.

In addition to this, Xpeng has added ‘Smart Camera Calibration’ to the lane-centring system, which it claims “automatically adjusts cameras to enhance lane-keeping accuracy, greatly improving lane centering control”.

On top of these safety enhancements, Xpeng has refined aspects of the cabin experience, specifically the functionality of its infotainment system.

This includes adding the vehicle’s state of charge alongside the estimated range when arriving at a destination via the navigation system, as well as more accurate destination searches and updated map styles.

The infotainment system can now also play music files from an external USB drive, while the touchscreen can also inform drivers of when they’re coming up on their next scheduled service.

Xpeng has also introduced a guest mode in place of a user profile not being logged in.

The X-Combo system has gained more customability, which includes Sentry Mode activation, vehicle speed sensing, estimated range sensing, plus internal and external temperature sensing.

Though Xpeng only sells the G6 in Australia, more models such as the larger G9 are available for locals to register their interest.
