Bentley adds second V8 plug-in hybrid to Continental GT and Flying Spur

A second, less powerful V8 plug-in hybrid drivetrain has been added to the Bentley Continental GT two-door, and Flying Spur sedan lineups.

Like the Ultra Performance version launched in September last year, the new High Performance variant pairs a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 with an electric motor built into the eight-speed dual clutch transmission.

For the High Performance, the drivetrain has been detuned to produce a total of 500kW and 930Nm. That’s down 75kW and 70Nm from the Ultra Performance.

Consequently performance is down. The 0-100km/h time in the Continental GT coupe is 3.7s, while the Continental GT convertible and Flying Spur sedan both require 3.9s. That’s a 0.5s longer wait in the Continental GT coupe and convertible, and a 0.4s increase in the Flying Spur.

Because the High Performance models use the same 25.9kWh battery as the Ultra Performance cars, electric-only range has increased. The Continental GT coupe is now capable of 85km of tailpipe emissions-free driving, and the convertible 82km. The Flying Spur sedan should be able to do at least 80km according to the WLTP standard.

Both the Ultra Performance and High Performance plug-in hybrids have more power and torque than the departed 6.0-litre turbo W12, which made 467kW/900Nm. Its 0-100km/h times sat somewhere between the Ultra and High Performance models.

The new High Performance is available in both core and Azure trims, with the Speed and Mulliner specs exclusively powered by the Ultra Performance setup.

Azure models are distinguished by a different set of 22-inch machined alloy wheels, vertical chrome slats for the grille, more chrome on the lower air intakes, Azure badging outside, as well as Azure embroidery on the inside, and diamond quilted leather seats.

The new High Performance plug-in hybrid variants of the Continental GT are available to order now in the UK, Europe, and the US. Australian availability and timing have yet to be confirmed.

In the UK pricing for the High Performance Continental GT coupe starts from £202,400 ($428,000), or £34,200 ($72,000) less than the cheapest Ultra Performance model.

With the introduction of the High Performance V8 plug-in hybrid, Bentley’s range is now available exclusively available with electrified eight cylinder drivetrains. The Flying Spur was previously sold with a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 plug-in hybrid system, while pre-update versions of all three had the option of a non-electrified 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8.
