Will Genesis actually build its latest sexy two-door concepts?

Genesis has generated buzz with two more two-door concepts, but despite their production-ready appearance the Korean luxury brand hasn’t confirmed them for production.

“We are looking for, we are studying for all the possibilities,” Genesis design boss Il-hun Yoon told media on the sidelines of the Seoul motor show, referring to the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts.

“Now we are under discussion. I can’t say when, how… But we are really looking hard.”

The concepts are derived from the flagship G90 sedan, and share the same 3180mm wheelbase as the regular-length limousine, as well as the same overhangs and same track.

Genesis says passengers have exactly the same comfort in the coupe and convertible concepts as in the regular-length G90 sedan.

Hyundai Motor Group chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke told media the height of the coupe has been “optimised” – referring to the sleeker roof line – but to ensure there’s sufficient headroom Genesis removed the panoramic sunroof thereby freeing up 40mm.

Genesis also moved the B-pillar back by 30cm to improve proportions, with the longer front doors and opening ensuring better rear-seat access.

Not only do the two concepts share key dimensions with the G90 sedan, they also share a powertrain.

“It is now a 3.5-litre V6 bi-turbo with an e-supercharger, but if we would go into production it will have the further development of that powertrain,” said Mr Donckerwolke.

In the G90 sedan, this powertrain produces 305kW of power and 549Nm of torque, and is mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive.

It’s also used in the GV80 Coupe overseas, though the local-market model makes do with the regular twin-turbo 3.5-litre sans the electric supercharger.

Should the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible reach production, they would have little in the way of direct competition.

Mercedes-Benz dropped coupe and convertible body styles with its latest generation of S-Class, while the Audi A8 and Lexus LS are available only as sedans. That leaves the BMW 8 Series.

Genesis has never sold a coupe or convertible, though it has now shown off a multitude of two-door concepts.

First came the Essentia at the 2018 New York motor show, followed by a trio of closely related X-branded concepts: the X notchback coupe in 2021, the X Speedium fastback coupe in 2022, and the X Convertible later that year.

In 2023, Genesis revealed the X Gran Berlinetta Vision Gran Turismo supercar, initially only as a digital concept; this was followed in 2024 by the related X Gran Racer Vision Gran Turismo Concept.

Before these, Hyundai sold a vehicle based on the first-generation Hyundai Genesis sedan called the Genesis Coupe.

This was prior to Genesis being founded in 2015 as a standalone brand and introducing its first model in 2017.

In 2015, Hyundai also showed off the Vision G concept, which wore the Genesis winged logo.
