GWM’s spin-off brand Tank revealed the wild Tank 700 back in 2023, and according to Australian executives, it’s still planned for local launch.

Speaking with CarExpert, GWM Australia and New Zealand (GWM ANZ) managing director Charles Zhao couldn’t confirm exactly when the flagship Tank offering will arrive.

“[Tank] 700 is definitely in the plan,” said Mr Zhao.

“So I can’t tell our exact time, but we do have this under study.”

“Australia is the key market for right-hand drive.”

In China the Tank 700 is currently only offered with a Hi4-T powertrain, which is GWM-speak for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

The Tank 700 Hi4-T uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine making 268kW and 500Nm. It’s augmented with an electric motor that bumps total system outputs to 386kW of power and 750Nm of torque.

Drive is sent through a nine-speed automatic transmission to a four-wheel drive system.

The Tank 700 offers air suspension, electromagnetic shock absorbers, and a disconnecting stabiliser bar for greater off-road ability.

It measures 5113mm long, 2061mm wide and 1952mm tall on a 3000mm wheelbase. For reference, a Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series measures up at 5015mm long, 2000mm wide, and 1950mm tall on a 2850mm wheelbase.

As it currently stands, GWM currently offers two Tank products in Australia: the Tank 300 and Tank 500.

The former recently gained a turbo-diesel engine option locally, and the latter will gain a Hi-4T PHEV powertrain option in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The Tank 400, which features similarly wedgy, aggressive styling to the Tank 700, hasn’t been confirmed for our market, while the flagship Tank 800 has thus far been revealed only in concept guise.
