2025 Cupra Born VZ: EV hot hatch delayed for Australia

Australians will have to wait a little longer for the hot Cupra Born VZ electric hatch, which now won’t arrive until the end of the year.

Cupra Australia has confirmed the local launch has been pushed back to December 2025, after previously indicating the flagship VZ would land by May.

In addition to delaying the launch of the Born VZ, Cupra Australia has restructured the rest of its launch calendar for the remainder of 2025.

The new Terramar SUV will now arrive mid-year, while updated versions of the Leon and Formentor will follow soon after.

“We’re working hard on the Born VZ,” said Cupra Australia director, Ben Wilks at the launch of the Tavascan electric SUV in Adelaide.

“It’s important to really roll these out responsibly in terms of timing, each of these models needs the right time in the sun. These are not necessarily delays from a factory perspective, but rather structure and order from our perspective.

“So you have Tavascan today; Terramar in July; the Leons, including the Sportstourer which we’re all very excited about in [the third quarter]; the Formentors will follow after that; and then the Born BZ at the end of the year. That order and structure gives customers confidence.

“And all of that gives our growing network the confidence that we need to keep expanding and to keep growing the Cupra brand.”

Upon hitting the market, the Born VZ will become one of the only electric hot hatches sold in Australia.

It features a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 240kW of power and 545Nm of torque, increases of 70kW and 235Nm over the standard Born.

As a result, the Born VZ can sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds, and reach a top speed of 200km/h.

Other changes under the skin of the VZ include a slightly larger 79kWh battery pack and a new DCC Sport chassis setup that includes revised dampers, anti-roll bars and rear springs.

External upgrades are limited to wider tyres and a choice of two 20-inch alloy wheel designs: either forged or with 3D copper inserts. Two new colours join the palette: Midnight Black and Dark Forest green.

Inside the cabin, the VZ is ready for the racetrack with bucket seats finished in recycled materials.

The tech has also been improved over the base car, with the fitment of an upsized 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen that features Cupra’s latest operating system.
