2025 Audi A5 and S5: Initial details for Australia

Audi Australia has confirmed preliminary details of its new-generation A5 and S5 family, ahead of local deliveries commencing in the coming months.

Three distinct variants will be available from launch: the A5 Sedan, the S5 Sedan and the S5 Avant.

The S5 will also offer special ‘edition one’ variants on arrival, said to be more “purist” versions priced under the regular S5 – full details are still to come, but think along the lines of BMW’s previous ‘Pure’ versions of its M Performance models.

Only the base A5’s price has been confirmed, with the single 150kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder variant to be priced from $79,900 before on-road costs. Audi will confirm S5 pricing – including ‘edition one’ launch models – closer to launch.

  • S5 Avant

Power in the 2025 Audi A5 Sedan (actually a liftback, despite the name) will come from a 150kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with Audi’s 48V ‘Mild hybrid plus’ technology, which allows for low-speed EV-only driving and claims to save up to 17g/km or 0.74L/100km on the combined cycle.

Meanwhile, S5 variants will pack a 270kW/550Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol V6 again running Mild hybrid plus tech and quattro all-wheel drive. Audi claims a 0-100km/h sprint of 4.5 seconds, 0.3s down on the outgoing S5.

While Audi Australia remains tight-lipped on specification details, it has confirmed its latest MMI infotainment system will feature across the range – including an available passenger display – as well as an available panoramic sunroof “with transparency control” (Audi-speak for electrochromatic glass in place of a conventional shade).

A 20-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D premium sound system will be available, incorporating a pair of speakers in each front headrest. Further, Audi’s latest Matrix LED and OLED tail light tech will also be offered.

  • S5 Avant

The Audi A5 will undercut both the BMW 3 Series (from $92,900) and Mercedes-Benz C-Class (from $87,800) when it arrives by mid-2025.

However, it’s unclear how the premium arm of the Volkswagen Group will position its mid-sized performance models against the BMW M340i and Mercedes-AMG C43.

At this stage it’s also unclear whether Audi will offer an equivalent 150kW A5 Avant to replace the outgoing A4 Avant.

There are currently no confirmed allroad versions to replace the old A4 allroad, either, while replacements for the outgoing A5 Coupe and A5 Cabriolet don’t appear to be in the works.

Overseas the A5 Sedan and Avant also offer 110kW and 150kW 2.0-litre turbo engines, the latter with all-wheel drive, in addition to a 150kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with MHEV plus and all-wheel drive.
