gm expands recall for transmission related wheel lockup issue

General Motors is expanding a recall it issued last year as it discovered more vehicles affected by the problem. The recall, which covers a problem that could cause the wheels to lock up, now impacts more than a half-million vehicles from Chevrolet and Cadillac.

The November 2024 recall hit almost 500,000 vehicles over an issue with the transmission, and this most recent action pushes the total past the half-million mark. More than 90,000 vehicles have been impacted by the new recall, with more than 50,000 of them being Camaros and the rest being Cadillac CT4, CT5, and CT6 models, all equipped with a ten-speed automatic transmission.

Recall documentation states that the problem relates to a faulty control valve, which could wear out prematurely, causing the system to lose pressure. That could lead to rough shifts over time, but in some of the worst cases, the gearbox could cause the wheels to lock up. GM said it had recorded 115 reports of lockups potentially related to the issue. Thankfully, there has been only one accident, and no injuries have been reported.

GM’s fix for this recall is the same as the last one. It includes a software update that can “detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a wheel lockup condition could occur.” The update will also limit the transmission’s gear shifts if the condition is detected, and the driver will see a check engine light in the gauge cluster.
