Police in Victoria have impounded a Tesla Model Y for 30 days after the electric SUV was caught travelling at 70km/h above the speed limit in the state’s border region.

On March 6, Wodonga Highway Patrol officers were driving south on Federation Way near Rutherglen when the Model Y was allegedly detected at 171km/h, with the signposted speed limit on the road being 100km/h.

The Tesla was subsequently intercepted by police and its 28-year-old driver was charged with exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, which usually incurs a fine of $988 and a 12-month licence suspension.

In addition to this, the man’s car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1255.

He’ll face court at a later date, while police issued a warning to other electric vehicle (EV) drivers about using their car’s rapid pace on public roads.

“We know these electric cars are capable of accelerating quickly and are very fast, but there are no excuses for these speeds and risky behaviour on our roads,” Wodonga Police warned.
