The EVs Geely benchmarked the EX5 against in Australian testing

The Geely brand has returned Down Under with the mid-sized EX5 electric SUV, which it claims has been localised to meet the needs and requirements of our market.

The Chinese carmaker’s namesake brand conducted local testing of the suspension and advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) with a third party more than 12 months ago.

As a part of the local testing, Geely executives confirmed the BYD Atto 3 small electric SUV and the Tesla Model 3 electric sedan were used as benchmarks for the EX5 – despite neither of these vehicles receiving any local suspension tuning.

“Over 12 months ago, we had a third party come in and assess the vehicle on roads, mainly in Victoria, and doing some testing in terms of the advanced safety systems,” said Geely Auto Australia product manager Ashur Varde.

“We’ve been working very hard to make sure this car is built for Australian roads.

“We’ve also conducted some benchmarking for ride and handling and steering.”

As recently reported, deliveries of the Geely EX5 are now underway in Australia. The entry-level Complete trim is priced from $40,990 before on-roads, and the flagship Inspire is priced from $44,990 before on-roads.

This makes it just $1000 dearer than the smaller BYD Atto 3 Essential, and thousands less than other mid-sized electric SUVs like the top-selling Tesla Model Y.

In addition to the sharp pricing, Geely is throwing a few more incentives in the until the end of April.

All EX5s sold before then will receive three years of free servicing, one year of free public charging, free premium paint and a free home charger. Geely is also offering a 3.88 per cent comparison rate.

Geely has confirmed it plans to launch more than six new models over the next three years. The next cab off the rank is understood to be a version of the Geely Galaxy Starship 7, which is a plug-in hybrid version of the EX5.
