2025 Mazda CX-5 update brings more standard kit

The Mazda CX-5 lineup is getting a bit of a reshuffle, with features previously reserved for high-spec models filtering down the range.

There’s also now a front-wheel drive version of the mid-spec Touring, which replaces an all-wheel drive version of the Maxx Sport trim that’s one rung down.

That means there are now three front-wheel drive CX-5s on offer: Maxx, Maxx Sport and Touring. The GT SP and Akera remain exclusively all-wheel drive.

The updated CX-5 range will go on sale in June, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.

Both the front- and all-wheel drive Touring models gain Mazda’s Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) and Cruising and Traffic Support (CTS) as standard.

These features were previously available only in the GT SP one rung up, and in flagship Akera trim.

Front parking sensors, previously exclusive to the Touring and up, have filtered down to the Maxx Sport, while the once-Akera exclusive Adaptive LED Headlamps (ALH) have filtered down to the GT SP.

If you’re confused by Mazda’s headlight terminology, AFS is the name for headlights that move depending on the position of the steering wheel, while ALH individually controls a number of LEDs to avoid dazzling oncoming motorists – in short, it’s Mazda’s version of matrix LED headlights.

As for Cruising and Traffic Support, it combines adaptive cruise control and lane-centring functionality, and aims to reduce driver fatigue when driving on a motorway in traffic.

The CX-5 continues to offer a choice of naturally aspirated 2.0-litre (G20) and 2.5-litre (G25) four-cylinder engines, plus a turbocharged 2.5-litre four (G35).

The updated CX-5 range is as follows:

  • G20 Maxx FWD
  • G25 Maxx Sport FWD
  • G25 Touring FWD
  • G25 Touring AWD
  • G25 GT SP AWD
  • G35 GT SP AWD
  • G25 Akera AWD
  • G35 Akera AWD

For reference, the pre-update CX-5 lineup is priced from $36,950 before on-road costs for the base G20 Maxx to $55,000 before on-roads for the G35 Akera.

A new-generation CX-5 is set to be revealed by October, replacing the current model which has been in production since 2016.

Local launch timing has yet to be announced, though Mazda executives have confirmed it’ll go on sale in South Africa in the first quarter of 2026.

The CX-5 is Mazda Australia’s best-selling model by a significant margin, with 22,835 delivered in 2024. That also made it Australia’s eighth best-selling vehicle.
