2025 Ford Ranger PHEV: Plug-in hybrid ute up to $5000 more expensive than V6 diesel

Australian pricing for the Ford Ranger PHEV – the plug-in hybrid version of the best-selling ute – has been locked in, with buyers paying a premium above the existing turbo-diesel dual-cabs.

Due to arrive in Australia during the middle of 2025, it’ll join the growing lineup of PHEV utes available locally, following the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV.

Available in dual-cab pickup guise only at launch, the Ranger PHEV is available in XLT, Sport, Wildtrak and the new Stormtrak guise, each with design cues to differentiate the electrified ute from its diesel counterparts.

Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

Prices start from $71,990 before on-road costs for the Ranger XLT PHEV, a $3150 premium over 2025 model year V6 turbo-diesel XLT dual-cab pickups, and $8350 more than the four-cylinder bi-turbo version.

The Ranger Sport PHEV starts from $75,990 before on-road costs ($4650 above V6, $9850 over bi-turbo) while the Wildtrak begins at $79,990 plus on-roads ($5150 over V6, $10,350 above bi-turbo).

These price differences can be largely attributed to the Ranger PHEV being subject to a five per cent import duty, as it’s made in South Africa. Other Ranger variants are built in Thailand, which has a Free Trade Agreement with Australia.

At the top of the tree sits the Ranger Stormtrak PHEV, priced from $86,990 before on-road costs. That makes it the second-most expensive Ranger in the local lineup, behind only the $90,440 Raptor off-road performance model.

Model Bi-turbo price V6 price PHEV price
2025 Ford Ranger XLT $63,640 $68,840 $71,990
2025 Ford Ranger Sport  $66,140 $71,340 $75,990
2025 Ford Ranger Wildtrak $69,640 $74,840 $79,990
2025 Ford Ranger Stormtrak – – $86,990

Unlike the rest of the non-Raptor variants of the Ranger, the PHEV ute is powered by a petrol engine, which is mated to an electric motor sandwiched between it and the 10-speed automatic transmission.

Ford has previously said it was targeting 45km of electric-only driving range for the Ranger PHEV, with its official documents claiming it can run for 48km on a single charge of its 11.8kWh battery.

The Ranger PHEV’s 3500kg braked towing capacity not only matches that of its turbo-diesel siblings but also the Cannon Alpha PHEV. The BYD Shark 6 still lags behind with a 2500kg braked towing capacity.

Drivers will be able to switch between four drivetrain modes for the best-suited engine and electric motor usage: Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later and EV Charge.

While the Ranger XLT, Sport and Wildtrak carry across most features from turbo-diesel versions, they also each get unique styling cues.

The Ranger XLT PHEV gains aerodynamic-look wheels, ‘PHEV’ badging on its faux wheel-arch vents (instead of bi-turbo or V6), a charge port to the aft of the rear wheel-arch and an active front grille shutter.

However, while the turbo-diesel XLT gets LED headlights as standard, the PHEV has been downgraded to halogen units.

Stepping up to the Sport, the mid-grade PHEV also gets a new wheel design, while mirroring the badging changes of the XLT.

This continues on the Wildtrak, which now has wheels with a striped design on half of its 12 spokes.

The Stormtrak – which will be available in limited but so far undisclosed numbers – gains unique Chill Grey paint, bespoke wheels with Chill Grey highlights, body-coloured trim, ‘RANGER’ bonnet lettering and thicker roof racks.

It also gets some features from the Wildtrak’s $2000 Premium Pack – such as matrix LED headlights and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen – plus the $2800 Flexible Rack System.

Ranger PHEVs will also be the only variants of the ute to include external power outlets, consisting of a 2.3kW (2300W) outlet in the cabin and two 3.45kW (3450W) outlets in the bed.

Deliveries of the Ford Ranger PHEV are due to begin mid-year, after it was delayed from its original early-2025 launch timing.
