Almost 9000 examples of the Hyundai ix35 have been recalled as they pose a fire risk.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, brake fluid may leak into the Antilock Braking System (ABS) control module,” Hyundai Australia says in its recall notice.

“This could cause an electrical short circuit leading to a vehicle engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and/or damage to property.

“Note: Affected vehicles should be parked in an open space and away from flammable materials and structures, i.e. not in a garage until the rectification is carried away,” the recall notice continues.

“If your vehicle displays an engine warning light, please stop driving and contact your local Hyundai dealer.”

In recent years, Hyundai has issued similar recalls for other vehicles such as the Veloster and Tucson.

  • A total of 8794 vehicles are affected from 2012 to 2013
  • The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) list is attached here
  • The original recall notice is attached here

If you own an affected vehicle, you’ll need to contact an authorised Hyundai dealership and schedule an appointment to have the rectification work carried out free of charge.
