AutoHunter Spotlight: 1972 Chevrolet Malibu

It’s quite easy to get enamored by domed hoods and stripes and forget about the regular cars that were often seen on the streets of America. However, those mainstream cars are now getting hard to find, especially in original condition. This earthtoned 1972 Chevrolet Malibu four-door sedan currently featured on AutoHunter is perhaps the quintessential example of this kind of car.

The Golden Brown metallic paint, which has recently been sanded and painted with four coats of clear coat, screams 1972 as if she was Helen Reddy. If you live your life in the 1970s, in a home chock full of linoleum, stone fireplace, and a Barcalounger, then you will feel at home in this Chevy. Features include a driver-side chrome mirror, 14-inch wheels with full wheel covers, and 205/75 Firestone radials. Dig into the AutoHunter auction to note the details of any blemishes.

The cabin is furnished in Light Covert cloth and vinyl, with a classic bench seat up front. Aside of air conditioning and a rear defroster, this Malibu doesn’t offer much in the way of options other than automatic transmission (with selector on the column, of course) and AM radio.

The instrument panel features a 120-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge—a paragon of simplicity! The odometer shows 42,570 miles, but the car’s title reads it’s mileage-exempt.

The 350ci small-block features a two-barrel carburetor, which means it was factory-rated at 165 net horsepower. The carburetor has been rebuilt, and new spark plugs and wires have been installed. Interestingly, Powerglide was not available with this engine, which is great news because the Turbo Hydra-matic used on this vehicle has an extra gear for a total of three.

Stopping power comes from power brakes, with discs up front. A single exhaust exits at the rear.

Another interesting aspect of this Malibu is that it was built in Canada, which means you can obtain an invoice for it from Vintage Vehicle Services—how neat is that? Promise us that if you are the winning bidder of this 1972 Chevrolet Malibu four-door sedan currently featured on AutoHunter, you will obtain the invoice and show us! The auction will end on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 11:15 a.m. (MST).
