Pick of the Day: 1966 Aston Martin DB6

If you have not figured it out yet, I love Aston Martins. I have had the pleasure of owning several over the years and, of all the brands I have had in my garage, Astons are the single most special ones to me. I used to always steal a glance at one of the Astons in my garage before going in the house, feeling lucky having a car so special and beautiful. To me, a Ferrari, Porsche, or other higher-end car is nice, but Astons simply deliver something special.

My Pick of the Day is the classic Aston that fits me the best, a 1966 Aston Martin DB6. I say fit in the literal sense in that it offers the most head and legroom for my 6-foot-four self. Sure, DB4s are the most pure classic Aston, and the DB5 is the top of the heap, but the oft-maligned DB6 (due to the Kamm tail and longer wheelbase, though the weight penalty was actually negligible) is the one I like the best as it requires me to make no concessions to comfort or drivability. I also love the spoiler incorporated in the rear.

This 1966 DB6 is described by the Southampton, New York seller as a nicely optioned, numbers-matching chassis and engine, left-drive U.S.-market example finished in the stunning classic livery of British Racing Green over tan Connolly leather trim. This looks to be a great example, and options include electric windows, a 5-speed manual gearbox, an electric aerial, and factory Blaupunkt radio.

The exterior looks to be in truly excellent condition with great paint and brightwork. According to the Aston Martin Heritage Trust Certificate accompanying the car, it is chassis number DB6.2414/L. It came from the factory in Goodwood Green over a Natural Connolly leather interior. It was built with 3.73 rear gearing, chrome wheels, a heated rear screen, Normalair air conditioning, whitewall tires, three-eared knockoffs, Marchal fog lamps, and Fiamm horns with a changeover switch for city and country settings.

It is important to know the service history of a car like this DB6, and the seller states that recent items include new fuel lines, new fuel pump, new fuel level sending unit, rebuilt carburetors, rebuilt brake master cylinder as part of a complete brake service, and new battery.

If I had extra cash at this moment, I would simply go to Long Island, buy this car, and then drive it to Amelia Island this week to use during the Concours, and then drive it home. It looks like a DB6 that could easily handle that.

The asking price for this stunning DB6 is a very reasonable $395,000 and, again, if I had the spare dollars it would like be the last classic car I would ever need to own. Yes, these cars really are that special.

If you have been considering buying a high-dollar European sports/GT car, I would forget about those cars from Germany and Italy and get this 1966 Aston Martin DB6. From my experience, I can say that you are not likely to regret it. No, James Bond did not drive a DB6 but, if he were taller, he would have.
