We recently talked about the Toyota Supra (and its badge-engineered sibling, the BMW Z4) at the Future Collectibles Symposium a few weeks ago. The Supra has always held its ground as a beloved grand-touring sports car and, in so doing, promises to be one of the best investments in the collector community. Now that the Supra has garnered enthusiast admiration for almost 50 years, let us look at one of the generations that put the car on the map a few decades ago:
Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1987 Toyota Supra. The car is being offered by a private seller in Lincoln, California, and the auction will end Tuesday.
Finished in Super White, the car has enjoyed lifelong California ownership, according to the CARFAX report. The listing contains some incredible pieces of documentation, including a “New Vehicle Delivery Check Sheet” dated March 16, 1987, that was filled out by Mike Harvey Toyota in San Mateo, California. The window sticker (showing a total retail price of $21,887) says the car was optioned with a $700 sport package that added an electronic modulated suspension, a limited-slip differential and headlamp washers.
The third-generation of the Supra – known colloquially as the “Mk3” – launched in February 1986, when the Supra broke away from being a variant of the Toyota Celica. The Celica changed to a front-wheel-drive car, while the Supra remained rear-wheel drive. It rode on the A70 platform and was produced through 1992 in Toyota’s Tahara assembly plant.
Under the hood, this car has a 3.0-liter DOHC inline-six that was rated at 200 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels through an “A340E” electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. Maintenance wise, the listing says the battery was replaced last August, routine engine service was performed in February and the tires were replaced in 2023 (only about 1,000 miles ago). The listing shows a photo of some handwritten notecards with recorded service notes – a clear indication that the car has been well-loved throughout its lifetime.
