Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae vs Ferrari 812 Competizione drag race

Who doesn’t love a dirty big V12 showdown on an airport runway? We’ve lined up the Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae (the final naturally aspirated V12-powered Lambo without hybrid assistance) against the Ferrari 812 Competizione – the predecessor to the also naturally aspirated Ferrari 12Cilindri – for a drag race to see which is quickest.

We’ll be running both cars down the unprepped surface to the quarter-mile marker, before going back again to do a roll race. The runs will then be capped off with some quarter-mile runs with no talking (the noise is absolutely epic).

We need to give a massive shoutout to our mates at Caltex for helping us cover the cost of putting this event on. It’s an incredibly expensive undertaking and none of this would be possible without their support.

The cars we are running today are powered by Premium 98 Caltex with Techron. Caltex with Techron has been scientifically proven to help clean and protect engines. A clean engine helps maximise power and acceleration while also delivering better fuel economy, reliable performance and a smooth drive. Head to Caltex.com/au for more information.

The cars

Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae

You would have heard of the Lamborghini Aventador. It has now been replaced by the Lamborghini Revuelto, but before it wrapped up, Lamborghini released a limited run of Aventadors called the Ultimae – there were only 350 coupes built and this is one of them.

The Aventador uses a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 mated to a seven-speed transmission and all-wheel drive. It produces 574kW of power and 720Nm of torque, and has a top speed of 355km/h. As a new vehicle, it was priced at around $1 million before options and on-road costs. Yikes.

Ferrari 812 Competizione

The other V12 in this straight-line faceoff is the epic Ferrari 812 Competizione. It’s the go-faster version of the front-engined V12 Ferrari platform.

It also employs a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre petrol V12, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and makes 610kW of power and 692Nm of torque.

It has a price tag of $1,035,768 before on-road costs and options – yes, it genuinely looks like they just pressed a bunch of numbers after the 1 to land on that price!

The results

This was such a close drag race. The Aventador took out the standard-start runs across the quarter-mile – to be expected given it’s all-wheel drive.

But when it came to roll racing, the 812 was able to pip the Aventador every single time. It has some serious legs, despite missing a front axle to send torque through.
