Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe revival previewed… and it’s not so pretty anymore

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands as the German marque’s flagship, but it’s been without the option of a coupe and convertible variant for almost five years.

That may soon change though, with US publication Car and Driver uncovering trademarks filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) which show off a two-door S-Class.

However, the trademark filings weren’t made by Mercedes-Benz itself, rather by Swiss firm Robu AG, which previously filed to trademark what became the AMG GT R SpeedLegend, built by longtime Mercedes partner HWA.

  • S63-based coupe

Car and Driver speculates the S-Class coupe could form a part of Mercedes-Benz’s ultra-limited ‘Mythos’ model series.

Announced in 2022, Mythos vehicles are billed as “ultra-exclusive collector cars”, with the SL-based Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed launching last month as the first model from the series, limited to 250 examples.

The first patent filed with the EUIPO included photos of what appears to be the Mercedes-AMG version of the S-Class, despite its Maybach wheels and two-tone paint treatment.

Though there are features from the luxury Maybach S680, it sports the front bumper from the AMG S63 and AMG rear badging.

  • Maybach S680-based coupe

The vehicle in the second patent filing has Maybach badges but also a unique split rear window, something which would further distinguish it from the existing S-Class lineup.

However, both models appear to share the same roofline as the four-door S-Class – making them more like two-door sedans than two-door coupes.

In a dramatic departure from past two-door S-Classes, the vehicles feature B-pillars.

While there have only been two generations of coupe and convertibles with the S-Class badge (the C126 from 1981 to 1991, and the C217 from 2013 to 2020), the CL-Class was based on the same platform as the flagship sedan between 1992 and 2013.

  • AMG S63 E Performance

The current W223-generation S-Class sedan offers a range of engines globally, though in Australia we only get three powertrains across the Mercedes-Benz S540 and S580, and Mercedes-Maybach S680.

The S450 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, the S580 uses a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, and the S680 is a twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12.

The AMG S63 E Performance, not sold in Australia, utilises a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain.
