The BYD Sealion 6 has become Australia’s most affordable plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), eclipsing the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV, as part of a wide range of changes and price cuts for its 2025 model range.
UPDATE, 21/01/2025 – BYD has introduced a new entry-level Essential version of the Sealion 6 with fewer features and a lower price. We’ve updated this article and brought it forward.
After slashing the price of the base Dynamic in January by $3000 to $45,990 before on-road costs, making it $1800 cheaper than the most affordable Eclipse Cross, BYD has introduced a new Essential version.
BYD lists only the Essential and unchanged Premium as members of the model year 2025 (MY25) lineup.

The range-topping Sealion 6 Premium is unchanged, apart from the loss of Azure Blue paint, and remains priced at $52,990 before on-road costs.
Although the BYD Sealion 6 only went on sale in Australia in mid-2024, it became Australia’s top-selling PHEV last year. A total of 6198 examples were delivered, narrowly outselling the Outlander PHEV (6126 sales).
The Sealion 6 also cracked the top 20 best-selling vehicles list for the first time in December 2024. A total of 1122 examples were delivered in the month, placing it 18th overall – ahead of established models like the Mazda BT-50 (1101 sales) and Hyundai i30 (1066 sales).
