Has this Japanese tuner made Toyota’s EV cool?

Toyota has been criticised for its slow rollout of electric vehicles (EVs), with the bZ4X thus far its only global battery-powered model.

Even then, the electric SUV hasn’t set the world alight, perhaps in part due to its conservative styling.

However, Toyota-owned modification firm Modellista used last week’s Tokyo Auto Salon motor show to demonstrate what the bZ4X can look like with a few tweaks.

Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

The Modellista Concept Zero takes the core elements of the bZ4X and turns it into something which wouldn’t look out of place in Back to the Future Part II.

Perhaps the most striking design change has been that of the bZ4X’s wheels, which are now three-spoke units with large aero covers to maximise efficiency.

Gone is the SUV’s black plastic body moulding, and instead there are white bumpers and white side trim in unique shapes – almost different enough to make the Concept Zero look like a completely different car.

A thin strip of LED lights can be seen at the front and rear within the bumpers, which would be a stand-out feature at night.

Changes aren’t exclusive to the exterior, with cabin tweaks including unique ambient lighting patterns, a matte silver finish on most interior trim pieces, as well as matching graphics on the centre console.

Modellista hasn’t yet confirmed plans to offer the Concept Zero as a production package, however it called the vehicle “a study model that embodies one of the near-future Modellista designs”.

The Toyota subsidiary also makes appearance packages for other popular models including the RAV4, HiLux, LandCruiser 300 Series, Prado and Corolla, as well as a number of Lexus vehicles.
