Mahindra electric SUVs one step closer to becoming cut-price Tesla rivals in Australia

Mahindra appears to be gearing up to add a pair of electric coupe-style SUVs to its Australian range.

CarExpert has discovered two recent Australian trademark applications for the XEV 9E and the BE 6, strongly suggesting the battery-powered models are just around the corner.

Mahindra has already said it is prioritising electric vehicles for the Australian market, with the models all but confirmed for a local release.

Potentially undercutting Tesla with a cut-price Model Y competitor, Mahindra’s XEV 9E was unveiled in November 2024 with a choice of two Volkswagen-sourced batteries – a 59kWh unit, and a larger 79kWh version offering up to 533km of driving range, based on the WLTP standard.

Buyers get a choice of a 170kW or 210kW electric motor – each with 380Nm and each driving the rear wheels – with the more powerful variant delivering a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of less than seven seconds.

Inside, the XEV 9E comes with three 12.3-inch screens stretching across most of the dashboard, along with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, dual-zone climate control, wireless smartphone charging, a panoramic sunroof, and over-the-air software updates.

While the XEV 9E is more family-friendly of the two, the BE 6 offers a sportier design, with a driver-oriented wrap-around dash, dual 12.3-inch screens, augmented reality head-up display, and slightly improved acceleration times.

However, it’s unlikely Australian buyers will be able to get their hands on the BE 6 Batman Edition – unveiled in August 2025 – with just 300 being made.

While Australian pricing and specifications have yet to be announced, Mahindra has a history of offering more affordable models than established mainstream brands in the segments it competes in.

The Indian automaker told CarExpert in July 2025 that it plans to add at least one new model to its lineup every year, with the aim of becoming a top 15 brand.
