2026 Volkswagen Transporter detailed for Australia – including the first EV version

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia has announced pricing and specifications for its seventh-generation (T7) Transporter, which will include the first-ever fully electric variant of the long-running German delivery van.

Arriving in showrooms from October, the new Transporter will initially be available in both short- and long-wheelbase body styles, with front- and all-wheel drive diesel powertrains, along with rear-wheel drive electric power in two body lengths.

The outgoing Transporter van’s manual option will not be carried over, nor will the base 80kW/250Nm TDI diesel engine. That leaves the new 125kW/390Nm 2.0-litre TDI diesel as the only internal combustion variant available at launch, paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic.

That raises the Transporter’s starting price to $58,590 before on-roads for the new entry-level SWB TDI 125kW, up from $45,890 before on-roads for the outgoing SWB T6.1 TDI250 five-speed manual.

The T6.1 SWB TDI340 was most equivalent to the new base grade, though. It was fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and priced from $52,690 before on-road costs – still a difference of $5900.

The new electric version, meanwhile, is priced from $83,590 before on-roads for the SWB, and $85,590 before on-roads for the LWB. It utilises a rear-mounted electric motor producing 210kW of power and 415Nm of torque, which is fed by a 64kWh battery – electric driving range has yet to be confirmed.

Interestingly, pricing for the electric Transporter (known as the e-Transporter overseas) is only $3600 dearer than that of the ID. Buzz Cargo. That’s despite it being noticeably longer and wider, albeit with a smaller battery than the Cargo’s 84kWh unit.

The new Transporter measures 5050mm long in SWB guise, while the LWB is 5450mm long (both 146mm longer than the T6.1). It’s also 128mm wider at 2032mm, and rides atop wheelbases measuring either 3100mm or 3500mm.

Load volume measures either 5.8m³ or 6.8m³, depending on the wheelbase, while diesel payloads range from 917kg to 1062kg. Electric versions offer payloads of 760kg (LWB) to 806kg (SWB), and a braked towing capacity of 2.3 tonnes, while diesels offer 2.0-tonne or 2.8-tonne towing with FWD and AWD drivetrains respectively.

Now standard are LED headlights and tail-lights, heated three-abreast seating, wireless smartphone connectivity, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and seven USB ports.

A full suite of safety gear – including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, parking assist, and a reversing camera – comes as standard, while buyers can option Matrix LED headlights ($2590), a digital rear-view mirror with dashcam ($1990), and a surround-view camera ($690).

Several configurability options are also available. This includes no-cost options like a front double bench seat or a load partition delete, while an additional side door, rear barn doors, powered side doors, side windows, wooden floor coverings, steel underbody protection, body-coloured bumpers, and a second battery will cost extra.

The new Transporter debuted overseas in 2024. It marked the first new Transporter generation in nearly a decade, as the T6 model was launched in 2016 and comprehensively updated in 2019 for the T6.1.

Volkswagen Australia’s introduction of the new Transporter continues its ‘year of the van’ campaign, which was already underway with the launches of the electric ID. Buzz, T7 Multivan, and updated Caddy and Crafter.

The battery-powered Transporter will be the German brand’s second commercial electric vehicle (EV) available in Australia after the ID. Buzz.

The Transporter range is also due to expand in the first half of 2026 with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, alongside additional variants including the five-seat SWB and LWB Crewvan, and a dual-cab LWB six-seater.

2026 Volkswagen Transporter pricing is as follows:

Model Price before on-road costs
2026 Volkswagen Transporter Van SWB TDI 125kW FWD $58,590
2026 Volkswagen Transporter Van LWB TDI 125kW FWD $60,590
2026 Volkswagen Transporter Van SWB TDI 125kW AWD $62,590
2026 Volkswagen Transporter Van LWB TDI 125kW AWD $64,590
2026 Volkswagen Transporter Van SWB BEV 210kW RWD $83,590
2026 Volkswagen Transporter Van LWB BEV 210kW RWD $85,590
