People love boxy, off-road-ready SUVs. While most of them never leave the pavement, the appearance of capability and ruggedness matters, which is why automakers are looking to cut into the Mercedes-Benz G-Class’s sales. Genesis is the latest to jump, with CEO Jose Munoz telling Road and Track that the brand is eying new flagship models, including an off-roader similar to the X Gran Equator Concept.
Hyundai revealed the concept back in April at the New York Auto Show, though at the time, it said there were no plans to push the vehicle into production. The concept had 24-inch wheels, roof rails, and a boxy, upright shape, but we don’t have any other details on specs or performance. Genesis joins BMW, which announced a potential G-Class competitor based on the X5 SUV earlier this year.
Munoz said, “We will go beyond the brand’s existing model lineup to create new flagship vehicles. For example, an off-roader infused with the spirit of adventure, just like the X Gran Equator concept. These vehicles, which are currently concepts, exemplify our ambition to offer leading products that deliver exceptional experiences.” Genesis may also move forward with a coupe version of the G90, and rumors have pointed to an electric performance car that would compete with the Porsche Taycan.
