Flying J has long been a solid spot for truckers and road-trippers to stop for gas and a bite to eat, but it’s now grown into a significant outpost for electric vehicle owners. The chain partnered with General Motors and EVgo to install 850 DC fast charging plugs at more than 200 Flying J locations over the last two years.

The companies made significant progress over the summer, growing the charging network from around 140 locations in 25 states to more than 200 across almost 40 states. While many public chargers offer a frustrating experience, the Flying J chargers promise a better charging process. They are built along major interstates and feature free Wi-Fi, on-site food and grocery, and well-lit charging stations.

All of the new chargers are EVgo 350-kilowatt units with two plugs, though the power splits when more than one vehicle is charging. Plug-and-Charge is also supported. Some charging stalls will also support pull-through charging for vehicles pulling trailers and larger models.

Flying J locations in South Carolina, Louisiana, Colorado, and others were the latest to join the network, and locations in Florida, Missouri, and Texas saw a major expansion. While the effort is impressive, the group is only about halfway done. It plans to build a total of 2,000 stalls at 500 locations across the country, with 1,000 completed by the end of 2025.
