Mercedes-Benz GLC EV to have 39.1-inch display in dashboard

The interior of the electric Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology has been revealed, and it will be available with a ginormous 39.1-inch ‘Hyperscreen’ slung across the dashboard.

Unlike the large displays seen on other Mercedes-Benz models, the GLC’s 39.1-inch behemoth is reportedly one screen, not two or three artfully tacked together.

The giant screen has a matrix backlight consisting of over 1000 LEDs. It also has two independent “intelligent” dimming zones, which can be adjusted via sliders. Presumably this allows the instrumentation and infotainment sections to be lit at different brightness levels. Mercedes-Benz says it has “filed a patent for this groundbreaking technology”.

Reports indicate the Hyperscreen will not be standard on the GLC EV, with lower-spec models featuring multiple smaller displays instead.

Dynamic ambient lighting is projected from the bottom of the Hyperscreen, which partially illuminates the large, flowing trim piece that links the dashboard with the centre console.

The console includes galvanised vents, wireless smartphone charging trays, large cupholders, and thin strip of physical buttons.

The all-electric GLC with EQ Technology will be unveiled on September 7, European time, at the Munich motor show. It will serve as a replacement for the EQC, and will compete head on with the just-revealed BMW iX3 that also rides on a new dedicated EV architecture.

Mercedes-Benz says the SUV will showcase the next evolution of the company’s Sensual Purity design language. As part of its teaser campaign for the new car, the company has already revealed the GLC EV’s bold illuminated grille (below).

While the GLC EV shares its name with the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid SUV that’s available in showrooms today, it will be quite a different beast. While the existing GLC rides on the MRA2 platform, the GLC with EQ Technology will be the first car based on the electric-only MB.EA architecture.

The GLC EV will available with an 800V electrical architecture, and both single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drivetrains. The most powerful variants will have around 500kW at their disposal.

Lower-spec variants will have lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, while top-shelf models employ a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry. Depending on the model, range is said to be between 500 and 800 kilometres according to the WLTP standard.
