Suzuki Jimny stop-sale lifted, Australian deliveries resume

Customer deliveries of the Suzuki Jimny XL five-door have restarted, with dealers informed nationally today a stop-sale on the popular SUV has been lifted and both sales and deliveries can therefore resume.

Australian customers who have placed orders are now able to collect vehicles in stock, with the stop-sale, which started in mid-July, lifted after the green light was given to Suzuki Australia from head office in Japan.

“Investigations have been concluded at SMC [Suzuki Motor Corporation] and they feel no concerns,” Suzuki Australia managing director Michael Pachota told CarExpert.

“They literally sent us a stop-sell … and told us that they were investigating an issue, and they’ve done an investigation and confirmed with us on all points that quality, safety and performance are all 100 per cent – as they should be.”

When asked by CarExpert if SMC disclosed what prompted the issue, Mr Pachota said it didn’t – but the automaker has done this before out of an abundance of caution.

“There’s no compromise on quality with Suzuki – this is how they operate,” he said.

The stop-sale only impacted the five-door Jimny XL, which is made in India, and didn’t include the Japanese-made three-door model.

It also prompted the offer by Suzuki Australia – and Suzuki Queensland, which distributes the brand’s vehicles in the Sunshine State – to refund deposits and cancel orders for the vehicle if customers wished.

“We went out to dealers to give customers a level of confidence,” Mr Pachota explained. “We said if they don’t want to wait or they can’t wait, to refund deposits for people waiting for cars.

“We hardly got a refund [request] – everyone said ‘no, we’ll wait’ – especially with aftermarket things on order, they said they’d rather wait”.

The Jimny is Suzuki’s most popular model here, with more than twice as many sales as its next-best seller, the Swift hatch, so far this year.

The impact of the stop-sale will become clear in August’s sales numbers, which are due to be released publicly next week.

The resumption of sales comes with plenty of Jimnys available for eager customers.

“We’ve got stock at the moment, because obviously stock kept coming through [during the stop-sale] – we were just holding it,” Mr Pachota said.

“We are ready to relaunch, so-to-speak, and send stock out to dealers immediately – that’s starting literally from today.”

While the three-door Jimny wasn’t impacted by the stop-sale, it has suffered from a supply interruption of its own this year.

Suzuki confirmed in February 2025 that the three-door Jimny, among other models in its lineup, didn’t meet newly introduced Australian Design Rules (ADR) outlining specific technical requirements for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems.

That meant Suzuki couldn’t import any more vehicles beyond March 1, 2025, when ADR 98/00 came into effect. The Jimny XL was unaffected as it had a compliant AEB system.

Suzuki still has stock of vehicles imported and complied before March 1, however an updated, compliant model won’t launch until the first quarter of 2026.
