2026 Toyota HiLux leaked, electric ute shown

Images of the 2026 Toyota HiLux have leaked online, showing off the new ute in detail – including what appears to be either an electric or plug-in hybrid ute.

Posted on Instagram by gilvane_bailker and bfmsoficial the images reveal overseas variants of the new HiLux – likely destined for Thailand and neighbouring markets.

These include one known as the HiLux Travo Prerunner, the HiLux Travo Overland, and another badged as the HiLux Travo 4Trex.

While official details of the new HiLux have yet to be announced for the Australian market, it’s expected the model range will largely carry over for the new generation.

Despite the large number of digital renderings online falsely claiming to be real images of the 2026 HiLux – with many generated by AI technology – it’s believed these images were leaked from a preview look of the Toyota at the Thailand Motor Expo, with the light signatures matching official teaser images released by Toyota last week.

The images confirm the slimline headlights on the HiLux, along with honeycomb or blanked-out grilles, depending on the variant.

Pictures of the interior also show the influence of the Tundra and LandCruiser on the new HiLux.

However, while Toyota is spruiking the HiLux as a new-generation model, many in the industry are calling it a heavy facelift of the outgoing ute – with the 2026 vehicle reusing the cabin structure and its panels.

All of this comes a month after a photo of the ute’s dashboard surfaced overseas, while specification details of the HiLux were published by the Australian Department of Infrastructure as part of the vehicle’s approval process.

Initially at least, official documentation suggests the 2026 Toyota HiLux will use versions of the 1GD-FTV engine – the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine carried over from the outgoing model.

At least two versions are believed to be adapted from the 1GD-FTV engine – a mild-hybrid version, and potentially a high-powered option – though Toyota has not yet confirmed details.

It’s expected the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engines will be dropped for the new generation.

Earlier reports out of Japan claim Toyota is also planning to add its all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine to the HiLux range in the coming years – possibly introducing a performance GR HiLux to compete against the Ford Ranger Raptor.

Overseas divisions of Toyota have confirmed the 2026 HiLux is set to be officially unveiled today – Monday November 10 – at 4:00pm AEDT.
