2026 Toyota Fortuner: What could have been

The axe has officially fallen on the Toyota Fortuner with the HiLux ute-based seven-seat off-road SUV not expected to return to the Japanese automaker’s lineup.

But with the heavily updated ‘new-generation’ HiLux launching recently, the idea of a Fortuner borrowing its best bits from Toyota’s newest ute is something buyers would more than likely be keen to see.

In fact, despite the Fortuner being discontinued in 2025, sales of the large off-road SUV were up 12 per cent year-on-year.

Along with fresh-looking front and rear ends, the latest HiLux benefits from suspension updates, new safety technology, and an all-new interior – while the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine carries over across the ute range.

These digital renderings by artist Theottle provide an idea of what a new Fortuner could look like with the 2026 HiLux’s exterior changes applied to it.

But, like the now-defunct Fortuner, this one has unique tail-lights and a specific tailgate to help differentiate it from its sibling.

However, the idea of a Fortuner with the HiLux’s new looks seems like it could be an easy modification, with some previous-generation utes in Thailand being ‘converted’ to the latest model by simply swapping some lights, bumpers, and quarter panels – even before the new model had hit dealerships.

What do you think? Would you like to see a new Fortuner return with the latest HiLux look? Let us know in the comments section below.
