The GWM Tank 500 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid SUV will have a sticker price of $79,990 drive-away.

There is, however, an incentive for those interested to jump in early, with the company offering ‘early bird’ drive-away pricing of $77,990 for private buyers, and $76,990 for ABN holders.

According to the terms and conditions, to qualify for the early bird price, the car must be ordered and delivered by December 31, 2025.

The Hi4-T will sit at the top of the local Tank 500 range, as the Hybrid models start at $65,490 for the Lux and top out with the Vanta at $75,990, all drive-away.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T’s plug-in hybrid system features a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that has a built-in electric motor.

Together they generate a total of 300kW and 750Nm. Pedal to the metal, the Hi4T can blast through the 0-100km/h standard in 6.9 seconds.

Under the boot floor is a 37.11kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery pack that gives the car an electric-only driving range of 120km under the generous NEDC standard. DC fast charging can done up to 50kW, and there’s also 6kW vehicle-to-load support, allowing the car to power small appliances.

In order to accommodate the battery, GWM has removed the third row of seats, reducing passenger capacity to five people.

By way of comparison, the Hybrid drivetrain used in the existing local Tank 500 models makes a total of 255kW and 648Nm. Hybrid Tank 500s have a 8.5 second 0-100km/h time and fuel consumption rated at 8.5L/100km.

The Hybrid features the same 2.0-litre turbo engine, but has a less powerful electric motor and, of course, a smaller (1.76kWh) battery.

With its “true mechanical four-wheel drive system”, the Hi4-T has selectable low-range gearing and three locking differentials. Its approach (30 degrees), breakover (22.5 degrees) and departure (24 degrees) angles are unchanged from the Hybrid, as is the wading depth (800mm), but the plug-in hybrid has 11mm less ground clearance at 213mm.

We’ll have to wait until the car’s official launch on October 7 to find out its full list of features and specifications, but the vehicle’s placeholder page shows it will come fitted with a 14.6-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, head-up display, 360-degree camera system, panoramic sunroof, parking assist, heated and ventilated front seats, eight-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, and adaptive cruise control.

GWM has previously confirmed Marble White will be the standard exterior finish, with Crystal Black, Onyx Silver and Dune Gold available for an extra $595.

A black interior is standard, although you can get a Blue and Cream interior on Marble White and Crystal Black Tank 500 PHEVs.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T PHEV has a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty with seven years of roadside assistance, as well as an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre high-voltage battery warranty.
