2026 GWM Tank 300 Hi4-T: PHEV off-road SUV coming to Australia soon

GWM has locked in another plug-in hybrid off-roader for Australia.

The GWM Tank 300 Hi4-T will arrive here during the first quarter (January to March) of 2026, with pricing and specifications to be announced early next year.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system will mark the fourth powertrain available across the local Tank 300 lineup, joining petrol, diesel and hybrid options, and the third plug-in off-roader from the Chinese auto brand following PHEV versions of the Cannon Alpha ute and Tank 500 large off-road SUV launched earlier this year.

It’s unclear how much of a price premium GWM will charge for the PHEV powertrain. In the larger Tank 500, just $4000 currently separates the Ultra Hybrid and Ultra PHEV.

The Tank 300 lineup currently tops out at $56,990 drive-away for the Ultra Hybrid.

Like the Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha PHEVs, the Tank 300 Hi4-T mates a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a nine-speed Hybrid Automatic Transmission.

It also retains a mechanical four-wheel drive system with a low-range transfer case and locking differentials, while also bringing the advantages of a PHEV including the ability to drive on pure electric power and to power small electrical appliances using its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability.

GWM is advertising a braked towing capacity of 3000kg, matching the Tank 500 PHEV but down 500kg on the Cannon Alpha PHEV.

While GWM hasn’t detailed outputs or electric range figures, a look at its Chinese website reveals the Tank 300 Hi4-T uses a 37.1kWh battery.

Its engine produces 180kW of power and 380Nm of torque, while the electric motor produces 120kW and 400Nm. All up, total system outputs are 300kW/750Nm, and the claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.7 seconds.

Depending on the variant and the level of charge, claimed fuel consumption is between 2.06 and 8.8L/100km on the WLTC cycle.

Like other Tank 300s, the PHEV features double-wishbone front and multi-link non-independent rear suspension, and is offered with off-road gear like a creep mode, tank turn function, various terrain modes, and a surround-view camera with a transparent chassis mode.

GWM is continuing to expand its range of electrified vehicles in Australia.

In addition to its lone pure-electric model, the Ora hatch, it has PHEV versions of the Haval H6, Haval H6 GT, Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha, as well as hybrid versions of the Haval Jolion, Haval H6, Haval H7, Tank 300 and Tank 500.

In the first half of 2025, GWM was Australia’s third largest brand for hybrid sales, and took the fourth spot for overall PHEV sales.
