The new-generation Audi Q5 Sportback and SQ5 Sportback will arrive in Australian showrooms this month with a $12,000 lower starting price, joining the regular Q5 SUV range which was updated earlier this year.
The Q5 Sportback – a rival to the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe – now starts from $84,500 before on-road costs for the base TFSI 150kW FWD, a saving of $5200 compared to the outgoing Q5 Sportback 40 TDI quattro S line entry point.
The savings don’t apply across the range, with the flagship SQ5 Sportback TFSI increasing by $1585 to $125,900 before on-road costs. A new ‘purist’ SQ5 Sportback ‘edition one’ does bring down the price of entry to the performance hero, however, to $109,900 – nearly $15,000 less than the outgoing SQ5 Sportback.
Where the old Q5 Sportback sat between variants in in the SUV range, the second-generation Sportback effectively mirrors the SUV lineup while commanding a $3500 premium over the equivalent Q5 SUV.

An ‘e-hybrid’ PHEV is planned for the local lineup sometime in the first half of next year.
The updates follow changes made to the SUV version earlier this year and include 48V ‘mild-hybrid plus’ tech across the range, with 19-inch alloy wheels, Matrix LED headlights outside and a curved 14.5-inch centre infotainment screen, 11.9-inch digital instruments, leather seating and tri-zone climate control standard on all models.
Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity and wireless charging is also standard and includes phone cooling, while a 360-degree camera, speed-sign recognition and adaptive cruise control with stop and go are also standard.
The entry-level Q5 Sportback TFSI is powered by a 150kW/340Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, teamed with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with front-wheel drive.
The standard MHEV plus tech uses regenerative braking to charge a small capacitor to enable short bursts of low-speed electric driving, with Audi claiming a 0-100km/h time of 8.6 seconds and combined fuel use of 5.7L/100km.

The TDI 150kW quattro offers the same equipment as the petrol for $91,100 before on-roads, but adds all-wheel drive and swaps in a 150kW/400Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, quoting a combined fuel economy figure of 5.4L/100km and a quoted 0-100km/h time of 7.4 seconds.
The $97,600 Q5 Sportback TDI 150kW sport adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and S line interior package including black headlining and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel.
The SQ5 range kicks off with the edition one – a limited-run launch special priced from $109,900 before on-road costs. It uses a 270kW/550Nm 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto and quattro all-wheel drive for a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds.
The cheaper ‘edition one’ comes with the black exterior styling package as standard, including anthracite Audi badging, metallic black-finished 20-inch Audi Sport alloys, red brake calipers, S sports suspension and privacy glass.
Audi hasn’t disclosed how many SQ5 Sportback edition one units it will offer, saying in a statement it is “available for a limited time”.

Once it’s sold out, it will leave the SQ5 Sportback TFSI – with the same powertrain and performance credentials – but running larger 21-inch alloy wheels, aluminium-look exterior styling details and premium diamond-quilted leather upholstery among its standard equipment.
The Q5 Sportback lineup is covered by a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and six years of roadside assistance, while Audi Australia offers five-year service plans at $3250 for the Q5 and $3650 for the SQ5.
