2026 Audi A5 achieves price parity between PHEV and ICE

Audi Australia is saving the wagon, confirming two new Audi A5 powertrain variants will arrive later this year with the option of wagon bodies and quattro all-wheel drive – including a performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

Speaking with media at the Australian launch of the Audi A5 and S5, Audi’s local product team confirmed the range will be bolstered later this year with 200kW quattro and 270kW e-hybrid quattro variants, available in both Sedan and Avant (Wagon) body styles.

Even better, Audi Australia has achieved price parity between the internal combustion-engined (ICE) and PHEV variants despite the latter getting more power and a higher level of specification – fitted with either AWD powertrain, the A5 Sedan will be priced from $89,900 and the A5 Avant will be priced from $92,900 (both before on-road costs).

A5 e-hybrid 270kW quattro adds:

  • Black exterior styling package
  • Black roof rails – Avant
  • Privacy glass
  • Auxiliary air conditioning

  • 240V 3-pin. Australian standard plug
  • 230V 32-amp CEE industrial plug
  • Type 2 charging cable for public charging
  • Wall bracket for mounting of charger

The 200kW A5 TFSI quattro is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making – you guessed it – 200kW of power and 400Nm of torque, driving all four wheels via a seven-speed ‘S tronic’ dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Its claimed 0-100km/h time is 5.9 seconds, and its top speed is 130mph (209km/h) according to US specifications – interestingly, this drivetrain isn’t sold in Europe but is the sole A5 option in North America.

Meanwhile, the 270kW A5 e-hybrid quattro is the higher-output PHEV variant first detailed in March, which teams a 185kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 20.7kWh net/25.9kWh gross lithium-ion battery, an electric motor outputting up to 105kW, and a seven-speed dual-clutch auto.

The 270kW vehicle coming to Australia quotes a brisk 5.1-second 0-100km/h time, and it can be charged on AC power at up to 11kW, which would see the battery replenished from 0-100 per cent in 2.5 hours.

Further, Audi quotes a WLTP-certified EV driving range of up to 87km for the Australian-spec A5 e-hybrid quattro.

The addition of the two A5 powertrains in both body styles brings the total range count from five to seven, if you account for the limited-run S5 edition one being discontinued imminently.

It also means Audi Australia has effectively replaced both the outgoing A4 Avant and A4 allroad with the new A5 models, and it’s the first time the German brand has offered PHEV tech in the premium mid-size passenger car segment.

Audi’s achievement of price parity between ICE and PHEV is also a first for the German brand locally, potentially providing an indication as to what to expect from future plug-in models from the brand. Historically, Audi’s TFSI e PHEVs have been priced closer to S variants than standard grades.

Next cab off the rank is likely the related Audi Q5 e-hybrid, which hasn’t officially been confirmed as a starter for Australia yet, though it is listed in the ‘future models’ section of the company’s local public website.
