The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Edition R is coming to Australia in “strictly limited numbers”, bringing various aesthetic and performance tweaks for a lower price than the regular GLC 43.

It’s available to order now as both a regular SUV, priced at $128,900 before on-road costs, and a coupe SUV, priced at $141,600 before on-road costs.

That’s less than the regular GLC 43 and GLC 43 Coupe, which per Mercedes-Benz’s website are priced at $137,533 and $148,134 before on-road costs respectively.

The Edition R isn’t just a trim package, as it brings some enhancements aimed at improving performance. It gains a Race drive mode, for example, that brings greater engine response and a “more direct accelerator pedal characteristic”.

There are also Mercedes-AMG’s dynamic engine mounts, which the company claims help the performance SUVs deliver the softest possible suspension when in Comfort mode and firmer suspension in Sport, Sport+ and Race modes.

Of course, there are various aesthetic changes too, including the fitment of Mercedes-AMG’s Night Package II which brings a darkened grille and dark chrome badging.

Edition R models ride on 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels finished in matte black, behind which sit red brake calipers.

Inside, the Edition R gets the Performance Seat Package Advanced which brings seats upholstered in Artico leatherette and Microcut microfibre, finished in black with red stitching and matched with red seatbelts.

There’s also “distinctive metal structure” trim inside which is exclusive to Edition R models in Australia.

The driver grips a steering wheel finished in Microcut and Nappa leather.

As with the standard GLC 43, standard equipment includes:

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Burmester 3D surround sound system
  • 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless phone charger
  • Satellite navigation
  • Head-up display
  • Surround-view camera
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Heated, power-adjustable seats with memory
  • Ambient lighting

The powertrain is unchanged. All GLC 43 models use a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine mated with a 48V mild-hybrid system that can provide up to 10kW and 150Nm in short bursts, as well as a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Total system outputs are 310kW of power and 500Nm of torque, giving the Edition R a 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds.

The Edition R models feature adaptive suspension and rear-axle steering like regular GLC 43s, too.

Edition R models will be available to order in the following exterior finishes:

  • Polar White
  • Verde Silver metallic
  • Graphite Grey metallic
  • High-Tech Silver metallic
  • Obsidian Black metallic
  • Spectral Blue metallic

There are also a range of other finishes available at an extra cost. These are:

  • Patagonia Red metallic
  • Opalite White bright
  • Alpine Grey solid
