The JAC T9 is now claimed to tow more than before… but still not as much as when it was first announced for Australia.

“The JAC T9’s braked towing capacity has been upgraded to 3.2 tonnes as a result of further validation and certification testing conducted in late 2024,” says JAC Motors.

There’s a towball download rating of 320kg, while the company also quotes an unchanged payload figure of 1045kg.

JAC Motors had previously announced a braked towing capacity figure of 3000kg and towball weight of 300kg in July 2024.

This was a downgrade from the 3500kg/350kg figures it announced when it first released pricing and specifications in March 2024, though payload increased by 45kg.

In releasing the updated figures in July, JAC said this underscored its “dedication to providing accurate and reliable information to our customers and stakeholders”.

At the time of JAC’s announcement of reduced towing figures, the rival GWM Ute and LDV T60 Max had a braked towing capacity of 3000kg.

Since then, the updated GWM Cannon and LDV T60 Max have seen their braked towing capacity figures bumped up to 3500kg.

Few utes on sale in Australia have a braked towing capacity of less than 3500kg, but some examples are the BYD Shark 6 and Ford Ranger Raptor (2500kg each), Jeep Gladiator (2721kg), and petrol and 4×2 diesel versions of the Toyota HiLux (2500kg and 2800kg respectively).

The T9 is one of the more affordable dual-cab, four-wheel drive utes on the market, with the base Oasis opening at $42,662 before on-road costs.

All T9 models in Australia use a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 120kW of power and 410Nm of torque, mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system.
